Ferguson played a pivotal role in A-State’s 2014 season-opening 37-10 non-conference home win over nationally 19th-ranked FCS Montana State last Saturday (Aug. 30) evening at Centennial Bank Stadium in Jonesboro, Ark.  He tallied a conference-high 13 points on three field goals in his A-State place kicking debut and converted all four extra-point conversions while punting for a 48.5 yards average.  The Jonesboro, Ark. native was successful on all three of his field goal attempts (23, 29 and 41 yards) in the game to tie for the most in the Sun Belt Conference this season to date.

Ferguson, who also was selected this Monday (Sept. 1) as a College Football Performance Award (CFPA) Honorable Mention Punter Performer of the Week and Honorable Mention Specialist Performer of the Week, recorded a 194-yards total on his four punts in the game and his longest of 61 yards was just two yards shy of matching his career long.

For his career, Ferguson is averaging 44.5 yards a punt in 27 attempts.  He has amassed 1,201 yards and recorded 12 punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.

The Red Wolves, who are presently 1-0 overall this season, will square off against the Tennessee Volunteers this Saturday (Sept. 6) at UT’s Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn.  Opening kickoff is set for 11 a.m. (CT) and the non-league contest will be televised live on the SEC Network.

JONESBORO, Ark. (9/1/14) – Arkansas State University junior kicker-punter Luke Ferguson has been chosen as both a College Football Performance Award (CFPA) Honorable Mention Punter Performer of the Week and Honorable Mention Specialist Performer of the Week selection this week (Sept. 1) for his noteworthy performance in the Red Wolves’ season opening victory over nationally 19th FCS-ranked Montana State this last Saturday (Aug. 30) night at Centennial Bank Stadium in Jonesboro, Ark.

Ferguson, who was also recognized as the Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Specialty Teams Player of the Week this week (Sept. 1), was one of two players to achieve CFPA Specialist Performer of the Week Honorable Mention accolades.  The 6-0, 210-pound Ferguson was impressive in his A-State place kicking debut by connecting on all three of his field goal attempts along with all four of his extra-point kick conversions.  Ferguson successfully converted on field goals from 23, 29 and 41 yards in the Red Wolves’ non-conference home triumph to not only tie for the most in the Sun Belt Conference, but also match for the fourth most nationally as of this past Saturday’s contests.

Ferguson averaged 48.5 yards per punt on four attempts while accumulating 194 yards.  The Jonesboro, Ark., native punting yardage in A-State’s 37-10 victory over Montana State was just 0.5 yards shy of equaling his career best.  All four of Ferguson’s punts landed inside the Bobcats’ 20-yard line and represented a conference high this season to date.  Ferguson also netted a long punt of 61 yards, which was two yards away from his career long.

Ferguson was one of seven individuals to receive honorable mention Punter Performer of the Week accolades by the CFPA this week.

A season ago, Ferguson compiled 1,007 yards on 23 punts for a team-leading 43.8 yards per average with eight inside the opponent’s 20-yard line and a career-long of 63 yards.  He finished the 2013 campaign with the second-highest single-season punting average in A-State history and ranked fourth among the Sun Belt Conference leaders.

For his career, Ferguson has presently posted a 44.5 yards per punt average with 1,201 yards on 27 attempts and has placed 12 punts inside the opposition’s 20-yard line.

The 2014 season marks the seventh season of the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA), which honors both player and team performances.

A-State, which is presently 1-0 overall this season, will take on the Tennessee Volunteers this Saturday (Sept. 6) at 11 a.m. (CT) in Knoxville, Tenn.  The non-conference tilt at UT’s Neyland Stadium will be televised live on the SEC Network.
